Natalie Heimel and Edward Mallue, Jr. had the president in mind in the days leading up to their Hawaii wedding.

The two Army captains knew Barack Obama spends Christmas in the Aloha state, so they sent him an invitation to their wedding at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course, located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

They got a response on Saturday, the day of their wedding rehearsal, saying that Obama could not attend but wished them a blissful marriage.

Heimel and Mallue had just finished the rehearsal when they received another letter.

President Obama wanted to play golf on the day of their wedding, so they’d have to move the ceremony to a different location.

Mallue’s sister told Bloomberg,

It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him. It was emotional, especially for her—she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.

Naile Brennan, manager of K Bay Catering, said anyone looking to get married at the course is told ahead of time that it’s the president’s favorite golf spot, and they may have to be flexible.

Whether Obama was personally informed about the wedding before scheduling his golf game, however, was not clear.

But as soon as Bloomberg told the White House about the wedding, Obama called up Heimel himself.

Mallue’s sister said,

He apologized and congratulated them. We were all there, it was perfect. Made their day.

The couple ended up relocating to another site on the golf course near the home of Colonel Eric Schaefer, the commanding officer of the base where the two are stationed.

Brennan said,

It’s more secluded and there are no golfers yelling, ‘Fore!’

The two were married on an elevated lawn, with the president’s phone call eclipsing any frustration from the previous day.
